Knowing how to write well allows you to deliver your ideas with the power they deserve.  Good writing conveys a sense of your professional excellence to the world around you, is one of the most important and essential skills for personal and organisational success and needed for success in the business world. In assisting you to develop professional business communication skills, this course offers effective strategies to sharpen your writing skills by structuring your ideas in a logical fashion, eschewing diplomacy in correspondence, accuracy in reports, and the analysis or shaping of arguments.  You will discover how business communication differs from personal and social communication and will see how today’s companies are using blogs, social networks, podcasts, virtual worlds, wikis and other technologies.  In this course, you will learn about the proper format for letters, memos, email messages and proposals. You will also learn basic writing techniques such as how to use active voice, maintain consistency and to write concisely.

Conflict is an inescapable part of our lives but how we view it and how we deal with it can turn it from being an unpleasant experience into one where we learn and grow. This course introduces students to appropriate responses in crisis situations based on the conflicts which are generated. It will also help students to understand how conflict can be positive and it will introduce students to tools and techniques that will assist them to effectively deal with conflict situations.
The first section of the course will explore the concepts and theories related to conflict and crisis management and the second section of the course will be an application of the understanding of conflict and crisis management to various situations. This includes relating to disasters and critical incidents (hurricanes, fire, earthquakes, flooding, terrorist attacks, hostage situations, kidnapping, missing persons among others) and what mitigation strategies can be used to prevent, minimize or de-escalate the conflicts in these situations.

This course is designed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of individuals involved in the field of security management, those who are interested in the field and those who are just interested in personal security.  It is a professional development course that will prepare individuals for higher learning as well as upward mobility within their organisation.  It will also clarify issues within the practice that are not readily apparent.

This course enhances the ability to develop skills and theories by thorough examination of crisis, grief and trauma counseling. It includes crisis theory, responses to crises, disasters and emergencies. It also discusses the neurological, cognitive, behavioural and affective effects associated with these events, whether they be instant/brief, medium or long-term. Assessment strategies are reviewed, and guiding principles of prevention are determined for individuals in these types of events with keen attention to those individuals with mental or emotional disorders.

Today’s business world is one that is centered on superior customer service. Thus, in order to have a competitive edge you must excel in customer service. Providing a quality product or service is merely the entrance fee to play in the game.  This course is designed to expose students to the attributes and benefits of delivering quality customer service. This will provide learners with effective customer contact requisites enabling them to exceed expectations in customer service. The programme pivots around the principles learned in the scripture of Matthew 5:16, Psalm 111:10 and Job 8:21.

The demand for events that are more extravagant and elaborate have spiked in the past few years and as such there is a high demand for qualified and experienced event planners. The event manager serves as the key component that brings all the aspects of an event together. This course covers how to build a concept, plan and identify the target audience for the desired event and explores both the theories and practical knowledge of innovation management, project management, marketing and public relations, including creativity and design elements – a thorough mix of business and management.  This course explores contemporary event management as a concept, the fundamentals of event creation along with a variety of efficient and effective marketing strategies. It will equip students with creative thinking and strong leadership skills so that they can coordinate teams to accomplish a successful event. They will develop excellent organizational abilities, give attention to details and learn how to communicate efficiently and clearly.

This course assists individuals in learning how the grants process works, the steps that need to be taken in planning a project for which funding is needed, the methods that can be used to search for sources, types of sources available for rural development and the components of a typical grant proposal. It will also emphasize the importance of the community involvement in strategic and project planning and its documentation for reference, (inclusive of the problems faced by its members and possible solutions) before the development of a grant proposal application. It will address how to assess the community needs and resources, analyze the problems and goals, implement strategies for sustaining the initiative, develop a plan for financial sustainability and market the initiative to secure financial resources.
The course aims to enhance the proposal writing ability of individuals, who are involved in both government and non-governmental organisations. It has the added perspective of blending art and science in the development of the grant. It requires basic know-how, content knowledge, writing proficiency, strong research skills, creativity, organisational ability, patience, and a paradigm that is relevant to their own context.

This course will introduce you to the hotel industry and the market forces in this field. You will focus on hotel operations in the areas of the departments, people, functions and influence of the experiences of guests, revenues and expenses, and hospitality careers. You will learn to make strategic inferences (based upon analysis of a given case study), be made aware of the foundational metrics, definitions, formulas, and methodologies used by the hotel industry, and in the identity of hospitality careers, and be able to debate the challenges and rewards of working in the industry.

This course is intended for persons who are, or will be, responsible for safety in the workplace. It will cover identifying hazardous situations and the reports that accompany them, determining how chemicals are handled, preventing workplace violence, implementing  or ensuring adherence to relevant policies, engaging staff in safety practices, conducting training sessions, accident reporting, disseminating national and industrial regulations that are applicable, conducting risk assessments of conditions and operations, and the analyzing of working and walking surfaces at the workplace.

This course is a study of the principles and practices of managing  accounts and finances, including how to create a budget, whether weekly, or monthly.  It provides an introduction to the objectives, principles, assumptions and concepts of financial accounting. It focuses on procedures and practices from the accounting cycle through to the financial statement presentation with an emphasis on recognizing, valuing, reporting, and disclosing assets, liabilities, and equity. It will also help students to know how to read and understand financial statements and to evaluate how finances are affected by four fundamental drivers of the company or personal profitability; asset management, cost management, leverage management and tax management. It will also assist in identifying areas for improvement.

The course objective is to inform students with the theoretical foundation of modern portfolio theory, the major groups of investors and their investment objectives and controls, and to master practical skills in investment management, forming capital market expectations and forecasting market actions.   Students will know the basic theoretical foundations of portfolio theory, understand the investment process scope and stages, be able to form market expectations, build strategic asset allocation, and select the optimal investment strategy.  They will be taught how and when to make investments including the buying  of stocks and bonds.

Logistics and Supply Management comprises the set of activities that are involved in the flow of products and materials from or through an organisation (the supply chain) to various markets. It also speaks to the management of an effective efficient flow, storage of goods, services and all related information in the supply chain. Key elements of this course include logistics planning, customer service, procurement (quantity and timing), transport modes, vehicle routing, planning strategy, inventory and its policies, handling and storage/warehousing.

This course covers the medical language and terminology used by health and science care professionals and enhances your ability to communicate with physicians, dentists, or other medical professionals. It not only teaches you how to analyse individual medical word parts such as prefixes, suffixes and word roots, but also covers body system dynamics, medical language, body orientation, health, wellness, and disease terms. You will learn how to combine words to create meaningful medical conditions, understand their definition and correct spelling.  Additionally,  it will cover the basic components of medical terminology as it relates to each body system, (muscular system, skeletal system, respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, reproductive system, and urinary system), as well as the common diseases that affect them.

In essence it is designed to build human capacity to aid in a comprehensive response for the needs of today’s businesses. Prior knowledge of project management is not a requirement for this course. The course is designed to expose students to the art of entrepreneurship, by instilling the essentials of starting and operating a business,  and is recommended for individuals operating within the business sector as an employee, employer (entrepreneur) or educator.

This sales and marketing course will allow students to strengthen the relationship between sales and marketing departments within a company. It will also allow those working within the industry to gain more value from the sales environment, allowing them to extend their online business presence and improve the communications function. This course has been developed to meet the needs of working professionals, managers and supervisory staff, from various non-marketing and sales backgrounds, who may wish to develop skills and techniques to effectively function within the areas of sales and/or marketing.

The CIW Social Media Strategist course is the fourth course in the CIW Web and Mobile Design series, which prepares candidates to take the CIW Social Media Strategist exam. After passing the exam the candidate will earn CIW Social Media Strategist certification.

This course is intended for the student to study the theory of taxation and its application using practical examples and demonstrating their competence in an exam. The course is designed to inform students about the provisions of Jamaican Income Tax laws and regulations impacting the determination of taxable income for individuals, partnerships and corporations. Students will be required to prepare tax returns and complete tax computations for individuals and businesses. Preparation and submission of tax returns in respect of payroll deductions and sales tax is also covered extensively, as is the impact of the taxation system on society generally.

Techniques of Photography will aid the student to be a photographer who is more: aware of their surroundings, technically competent and has a higher emotional intelligence that will aid them in capturing better images in the years to come.  This class will give you a grasp of the DSLR camera and the skills to make images that are noteworthy. Core and advanced photographic techniques will be explored.  You will be a hands-on photographer and will be required to present your work in portfolio submissions periodically throughout the course with a final submission at the culmination of the course.  You will be enabled to be your own critic after learning the skills that are employed in digital photography and analyzing the work of photographers, both amateur and professional. These will be looked at to assist you to understand the basic fundamentals of composition that create commanding and compelling imagery.  You are and your camera will become a team and you will leave this class proud of your final project and the ability to use your camera to fully capture your ideas, imagination, vision and portraits.
